Bagheera: The Story of a Pocket Panther Who Chose Her Own Freedom and Learned to Fire Meerkats
🤍 The Diplomacy of the White Towel
She arrived at the Home through a classic scenario of looking-glass magic: an ordinary Facebook post promising a small black kitten to a good home. But what arrived wasn’t a kitten at all. A panther had come to the Home — just in a pocket-sized format, for the time being. No childish clumsiness, no timid first steps: grace, agility, and a regal gaze were woven into her DNA from the very first second.
After her bath (proper houses do things properly, after all), the kitten was gently wrapped in a white towel. It was inside that very “cocoon” that the historic meeting took place, duly recorded in the Home’s chronicles. Alyonka, our Chief Cinnamon Bun — the dog who, up until that moment, had firmly evicted the entire feline race from the garden — bent down over the white bundle. All that poked out of the towel were two coal-black ears and the attentive nose of her future mistress. Alyonka performed a strict “customs inspection,” sighed in approval — and that was that. Life sorted itself out, and the Home officially had three girls (Mum included).
Little Bagheera grew up a true lady: not a single broken vase or torn curtain. Instead, she confidently claimed the Home’s verticals, freezing in sunbeams on tabletops next to the remote controls, as if even then she were already trying on the role of this space’s chief director.
🚪 A Man’s Conspiracy and the Laws of the Garden
Any plans to keep Bagheera as a strictly indoor cat shattered against the laws of the universe. She would step out onto the threshold, bask on the warm stones, play — and then sit by the glass doors and switch on her signature hypnotic stare, glancing back and forth between the humans and the cherished door handle.
At some point, when Mum went away, Dad was left alone with the tailed gang. It was during this period of undivided male rule that their secret pact of freedom was born. Dad simply started opening the doors. Bagheera made the garden her own personal residence, and by the time Mum returned, a new, entirely harmonious order already reigned in the Home — one that nobody dared disturb.
Today, Bagheera is full of majesty. She accompanies the family on dog walks, supervises guests at parties, and brings “gifts from nature” to the doorstep: birds and lizards. But she does it with astonishing aristocratic restraint — alive! The maximum casualty of these diplomatic visits is a startled lizard’s dropped tail. Not a single living soul has yet been harmed in her hunts.
She regards every two-legged creature in the house as loyal staff, with one exception: Dad. With him, she has a “joint business venture” — she lies down on his desk, plays with the computer mouse, taps her tail against his hands, and he’s the only one she allows to move her sleeping majesty or fiddle with her sensitive ears.
👑 The Fate of the Court Meerkat
But every great queen has her own small secret. For Bagheera, it’s a plush meerkat.
He guarded her peace during her first days of quarantine in her room. Later, Bagheera began proudly carrying him out into new territories, and Mum came up with an important ceremonial role for the meerkat: to stand guard over the cat buffet, right inside a vintage stemmed glass bowl.
Ever since, the meerkat, with his perfectly straight back, has served as Her Majesty’s silent page. But Bagheera regularly stages her “palace coups.” If the page disturbs the geometry of the table or stares a little too intently into the royal plate, the cat gently takes him in her teeth and… fires him. The meerkat is exiled to the floor, and sometimes flies clear down the stairs, past the turquoise mini armchairs and the enormous plush teddy bear (where the elegant sphynx Bibisechka forever loves to sneak into frame). Only to return, once the storm has passed, to his post by the bowl, and wait obediently for his black queen’s next mood.
